   Hi everyone,

   I was wondering if anyone had any luck changing the ordering of the podcasts on the podcast page.

   To me, it seems like it would be more logical to have the newest podcasts at the beginning of the list (top of the page), rather than at the end.

   I have a PHP background, so I did a little poking around the podcasts MVC's but i'm not entirely familiar with the python syntax so I figured I'd ask around.

   Any suggestions would be appreciated.

   Hmm, in a quick investigation I could not see how podcasts are ordered at all... So it could be that it's just 'database-random' (which usually means oldest first). A quick hack would be to change mediacore/controllers/podcasts.py (though that's pretty inefficient):

   
return dict(
podcasts = reversed(podcasts),
)

   I tried this however now there are no results on the page. I also tried the reverse() function but that resulted in a 500 error.

   Any other suggestions?

   Felix is right. The current query is basically 'database-random'. The query specifies no order, so it just displays in whatever order the database returned by default.

   See lines 56-58 in mediacore/controllers/podcasts.py:
   

   podcasts = Podcast.query\
               .options(orm.undefer('media_count_published'))\
               .all()

   If you want the newest podcasts to display first, change those lines to look like:
   

   podcasts = Podcast.query\
               .options(orm.undefer('media_count_published'))\
               .order_by(Podcast.created_on.desc())\
               .all()

   As a followup on why reversed() didn't work, I think I've figured it out:

   reversed() returns an iterator object, that will only iterate over the items in the provided list once, then behave like an empty list (the behaviour of iterators is explained in the python docs).

   If you ever want to reverse something, you must use 'reversed(something)' in place of 'something' at the point where you want to use it. Otherwise you run the risk of another piece of code exhausting your iterator.
