   I've got quite a bit of hands-on experience installing and setting up website programs and utilities - built my own seedbox with rtorrent - but I have to admit defeat with Mediadrop.

   There are two issues - the steps themselves, and the written instructions. The installation steps are too cryptic and, at times, unclear. A picture is worth a thousand words - so why not provide screenshots?

   "Copy the data folder from your MediaDrop source code next to the production.ini file.", and "Now open http://localhost:8080/ to see how it works! You can try access the admin at http://localhost:8080/admin/". I'm at my browser, and scratch my head as to what I'm doing opening a localhost URL. It obviously means something to a programmer, but not to me. Even 'above' or 'below' /var/www puzzles me - what is your reference point?

   What is really needed is a proper installation script, not a list of piecemeal instructions.

   I do appreciate the work that's gone into the project, and for making it open source. For this, my thanks! But the installation is beyond me, and - judging by the topics in this forum - a good number of other people.

   Agreed with regards written instructions here, they do assume your a nix guru tbh. i have limited nix experience to be fair but enough to get by, over the past two weeks I've tried several user submitted "walkthroughs" off this forum based on Ubuntu Server which is frowned upon on by our development guys as they prefer an enterprise solution.

   Anyway...since switching to RHEL and following the github guides i had the install up and working in less than an hour, i cant believe how straight forward it is when explained properly and have had the service up , decommissioned and rolled out twice since with no problems.

   i highly recommend Rob Goretskys guide here to anyone having trouble getting media drop working, see for yourself

   follow the requirements page then jump onto the main install on the index page. once you've been through it once or twice you shouldn't have any issues.

   that all said the application (once working!) is really cool, we are looking at using it as an online learning resource within our organisation to assist student learning at home, and that fact that its open source but looks like an "expensive" solution is a massive bonus given the state of funding for education at the moment.
