I have a feeling im getting really close to making this work

I did manage to make version .82 Run on windows but after trying to compile the newest version and run it, it became a bit of a hastle.. GO FIGURE WINDOWS PSSHHH...anyway.... im having a small issue with UBUNTU install, I have installed all pre-req libraries
I am running Python 2.6

and i am getting this error: if anyone could help it would be much appreciated

Hmmm. That is a strange error, are you trying to install 0.9 or 0.8.2?

James, I think you missed a package (maybe the install docs are incomplete).

The relevant line in your output is:
"tk.h: No such file or directory"

AFAIK you need to install the tk-dev package. If that doesn't help, try asking someone in the Ubuntu community which package contains tk.h.

Actually the package is called tk8.5-dev in Maverick.

How I found the package name (so you can solve similar problems yourself later on): Go to packages.ubuntu.com, find the package (http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/python/python-imaging) and check the dsc file for "Build-Depends".

I am getting a semilar error. I have ubuntu 10.10 and trying to get MediaCore-0.9.0 to work.
I installed this package but still getting errors: http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/python/python-imaging

I really think the documentation for Ubuntu should be revalued

@ondergang: Yes, the docs are a bit inaccurate sometimes but your thing is actually documented: You lack the python-dev package (docs say you install python2.5-dev but you should've seen a message when you tried to install this non-existent package).

The important line in your output is
_imaging.c:76: fatal error: Python.h: No such file or directory
Whenever you see something like that, check which header (.h) file it is and which package contains this file.

Oh well, Python 3 won't work at all (very few Python apps will work with Python 3).

Yea you updated python a bit to far, the futhest ive been sucessful with is Python 2.6 - 2.7
but i can now confirm that i have it working and live with python 2.7 on Ubuntu 10.10
The Ubuntu documentation states that it is only for Ubuntu 9.04
Make sure that you install all Dependencies when creating the server
If you are having trouble finding them search though the installable packages until you find one that closely matches what you want.

THis will list all installable packages that are associated with Python

Go back through the list of installable packages needed for MediaCore, and try installing them until you find the one that your missing

LIST:
apt-get install python2.6
apt-get install python2.6-dev
apt-get install python-dev
apt-get isntall python2.6-doc
apt-get install python-mysqldb
apt-get install mysql-client-5.1 libmysqlclient15off
apt-get install mysql-server
apt-get install libmysql++-dev
apt-get install zlib1g
apt-get install libjpeg-dev libjpeg62 libjpeg62-dev zlib1g-dev libfreetype6 libfreetype6-dev
apt-get install python-imaging
apt-get install python-setuptools
easy_install virtualenv

after all that is successfully verified, you should reload your virtualenv
source /virtual_env_location/bin/activate

then recompile the mediacore
cd /mediacore_location
python setup.py develop

then you should be set and ready to populate your database, and then deploy with the paster server
or with WSGI or FASTGI

I will be making a TUTORIAL VIDEO SHORTLY for Ubuntu Users, I feel your pain took me a few days of doing this over and over until i finally figured everything out...now it takes me about 20 minutes to get all packages installed, and get everything running and served

Hi James,

thank you very much for publishing your solutions. Are you interested also in improving the existing MediaCore docs?

Especially the Debian/Ubuntu section could get some love. If you are interested, Probably the section should get more general (no tied to a specific version of Debian/Ubuntu unless this is really necessary). You can either use git to clone the repo or just download requirements.rst and send the changes by mail (e.g. to me – felix.schwarz@oss.schwarz.eu).

Yea, the UBUNTU section really could use some TLC(Tender loving care). I'll edit that right up, and send it via EMAIL because I'm not 100% familiar with GIT, all i've done is clone ropos, never added a fork or anything, sure i could get it down though.

I made the installation. All seems to be working when calling http://127.0.0.1:8080.

1-
I do however want to point out that i rebooted my server instead of reloading the virtualenv as i did not find the fallowing directory structure : /virtual_env_location/bin/activate

2-
libmysqlclient15off is not available in Ubuntu 10.10.
I installed the fallowing package instead ibmysqlclient15off_5.1.30really5.0.83-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb because i am using the 64-bit Ubuntu version:

# wget http://mirror.leaseweb.com/ubuntu//pool/universe/m/mysql-dfsg-5.0/libmysqlclient15off_5.1.30really5.0.83-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb
# dpkg -i libmysqlclient15off_5.1.30really5.0.83-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb

Anyways i am still curious about your tutorials.

That was my mistake for including the "libmysqlclient15off" "libmysqlclient16" is already PRE INSTALLED INTO ubuntu 10.10

and I am currently as i type this Finishing Production on the UBUNTU 10 install Tutorial Video
It will be in a downloadable package, with Tools, a README and the video itself AVAILABLE SOON!!!!
i hope everyone takes full advantage of the video and the tutorial because if they follow the steps precicely they should have no issues installing on UBUNTU 10.10...or from 9 up with some minor tweaks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
